Shirley Higgins 50 years at BGC Wales
Congratulations to Shirley Higgins MBE who is now celebrating her 50th year of working for Boys' and Girls' Clubs of Wales! – she said to mention she was very young when she first started.
Shirley has enjoyed working with eight different General Secretaries, National Directors, Chief Executive and numerous Sports, Training and Project Officers. She has been based at the offices in High Street Cardiff, St Athan’s Boys Village, Headlands School Penarth and now at Western Business Centre in Cardiff. As Admin and Finance Officer Shirley has responsibility for the day to day financial and administrative control of BGC Wales but also organises design and publishing of match day programmes for the sport panels and flyers and posters for all our activities.
Shirley met her husband Ted whilst working at St Athan’s Boys Village where Ted – a Power Station Engineer – was lodging at the time. They have been happily married for 40 years and Ted is these days a very supportive and valued volunteer at BGC Wales.
In 1992 Shirley was awarded the MBE for her services to Boys Clubs of Wales but she has always insisted that the award is a tribute to the hard work of all the organisations’ volunteers where dedication and hard work never ceases to amaze her. Chief Executive Joff Carroll OBE said “I have enjoyed working alongside Shirley for almost 18 years. She can be a right pain in the arse at times, but I keep a photograph of her on my lawn to frighten off any birds after my seeds.)
Should Shirley ever retire (doubtful) she would be a very hard act to follow!
