NTUS First Residential

The first residential of our “Not The Usual Suspects” project took place from Friday, 6 November to Sunday, 8 November at the Maes y lade Centre in the Brecon Beacons. The aim of the project is to involve young people in learning about politics and to illustrate them the importance of their participation in political questions. Apart from different workshops about politics, various outdoor activities were organised.

A group of 30 leaders and young people between 13 and 18 years arrived at the centre on Friday evening. After dinner, the participants took part in a Night Navigation Exercise, during which small teams had to find as many marks as possible in the dark around the centre with the help of a map and a torch.

The Saturday morning started with some games to get to know everyone and a workshop about “Vote with your feet”. During this workshop, the participants had to agree or disagree to different political and non-political statements and explain and discuss your decision. About noon, the group left the centre equipped with waterproof clothes to the Talybont forest.

There took an Adventure trip place, including zip lining across a stream, walking through an old abandoned railway tunnel which was partially as dark as in a pit, and canyoning up and down a stream. A great experience! Around 5 pm, the group arrived exhausted back in the centre and spent the evening relaxed with watching a DVD about the Youth Exchange with the TSV Eltingen in Germany last summer which was created by the youth leader from Germany, Albrecht Niessner, who has joined the weekend.

On Sunday morning, the participants took part in a Lasertag game, in which two teams fight with laser weapons against each other. The virtual hits are spotted and counted by a computer. The residential ended with another political workshop. Different groups discussed about various questions concerning everyone’s life habits and if and why the governmental body should know about it. At 2 pm the group left the centre and returned back home.

It was a great weekend and we are looking forward to the next residential!
