NTUS Third Residential

The third residential of our “Not The Usual Suspects” project took place during the Easter break from Monday, 28 March to Friday, 01 April at the Maes y lade centre in the Brecon Beacons. After arriving at the centre on Monday afternoon, we played some games to get to know each other and enjoyed some free time on our first evening.

Equipped with waterproof clothes we went to the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal on Tuesday morning and entered the water in canoes. After some exercises to get used to the boats, we paddled up and down the canal and played some games. Who knew that it is so difficult to catch a ball when you are sitting in a canoe? At the end we tried to walk from one canoe to another and to fit all into one canoe which ended up in a drop into the cold water. Back in the centre we had dinner and talked about the upcoming Not The Usual Hustings project where local politicians would discuss about young people’s issues.

On Wednesday morning we headed to Cardiff and went to a meeting room in the Indycube in Cardiff Bay. There we made some last preparations for the Hustings event in the following week. One group created a Facebook event, another group designed the wrist bands for the event and the third group thought about some questions to ask the politicians. After a successful preparation we enjoyed some free time in the city centre of Cardiff before we went back to the Maes y lade centre. In the evening we had free time.

We left the centre for our next Adventure day on Thursday morning and went to some rocks close to Merthyr Tydfil to try out rock climbing. With a choice of five routes in different levels of difficulty we had the opportunity to challenge ourselves as much as we wanted. The biggest challenge? To face the fear of heights when you reached the top and have to abseil back to the ground. In the afternoon we went back to the centre with some new experiences gained and after dinner we had a discussion about the different political parties in the UK.

Before leaving the centre on Friday morning we played a Laser tag game on the yard of the centre. On the way back we made a stop at the Infinity Trampoline Park in Cardiff to take a look at the location for the Hustings event. In the afternoon we went back home after a great residential. We had a great week and we are looking forward to the next one!
